ABOUT ATREYEE
The river Atreyee,
is the largest international river
across the region as it crosses both India & Bangladesh in its course of journey.
It starts from Bangladesh and passes through the Chalan Beel in Natore and
meets with Baral river in Pabna and finally falls into the great Padma River.
Its name can be
found in Mahabharata and it was the main
channel of Teesta which once fell into the river Padma, however the great flood
of 1787 altered Teesta’s route to a new channel towards mighty Brahmaputra
through the Rangpur District. Since those days the importance of the Atreyee
has suffered with further diminution from a tendency to slit up which has been
hastened by the raising of the level of the river-bed in the earthquake of 1897.
Total length of
this river is approximately 240 miles (390 km). Maximum depth of river is
99 feet (30 m).
Atreyee starts
from the north-east of Bangladesh near the villages of Joyganj in Panchagarh
disrict and flowing southwards passes through the PSs of Debiganj, Birganj,
Khanshama and Chirir Bandar, from north to the south. In Birganj on its western
bank a small branch of 15 km in length called the Gabura or Garveswari comes
out and travels close to the Dinajpur town and rejoins the Kagaon part of Atreyee. In Chirirbandar Atreyee River splits into
two, one is Kaogaon and the other part ‘Kankra’ meets again just before the
Mohanpur Bridge in Chirirbandar , then it enters India and travel two PS of
South Dinajpur District - Kumarganj and Balurghat. After Balurghat it enters again in Bangladesh
at Dhamoirhat PS. and travels other PSs like Patnitala, Mahadevpur, Manda,
Atrai, etc.
